Writing, Copy-editing & Proofreading
Here are some examples of how we help clients to achieve results.
Conference and event report writing
Whether it’s a report of a small group discussion, a short seminar or a multi-date conference series we begin by discussing the desired outcomes with the client. We usually attend the event, although reports can be prepared based on full transcripts. We liaise with contributors if desired; gather, collate and analyse any discussion group feedback; and prepare a draft for client approval before finalising copy. The final report can be desktop produced to a high standard, or we work with a designer to achieve a more polished publication.
Client: Goodison Group in Scotland
We wrote reports on a series of conferences and seminars for a joint project on future learning and skills run by the Goodison Group in Scotland and Scotland’s Futures Forum.
Published reports include: ‘By 2025… An international perspective’; ‘The promise and challenges of early years investment’ and ‘Learning and skills in the 21st century’. The 18-month-long project involved Angela collaborating with project lead Robert Rae of 3rd Horizons Ltd, and Emma Quinn Design for report layout. A final set of reports was launched in February 2013 at the Scottish Parliament.
Client: ELT Events
We wrote and desktop published this report for ELT Events, covering their one-day conference held in Stirling in 2012: Curriculum for Excellence Plus: Alignment or overload? (.pdf)
Case study, blog and cameo writing
We write or copy-edit short news blogs, cameos or more detailed case studies, agreeing the objectives and style with the client. This can involve a visit, or discussions with the subject of the article, researching the background, sourcing supporting references and clearing copyright issues. Alternatively we work with material already drafted, which we adapt, edit and restyle to fit a template.
Client: Field Studies Council Scotland
We were commissioned to write regular news blog items for the FSC Scotland website, increasing relevant content and website traffic. The main aim was to build a relationship with FSC’s current and potential customers – teachers and lecturers – by connecting work at FSC Kindrogan and Millport with outdoor learning in the curriculum. Published blogs included Rocks and soil, science and social studies….
“Angela has been great to work with, she provides relevant and thoughtful copy-writing meeting any deadlines. She has also been immensely helpful in additional ways like putting me in touch with some of her contacts and sharing our stories on social media – really going the extra mile.”
– Mel Cousins, Marketing Assistant – Field Studies Council
Client: Intelligent Editing Ltd
We were asked to write an in-depth blog on Non-breaking Spaces: How to Check Something you Cannot Event See as part of Intelligent Editing‘s series offering tips and advice to authors and editors. It was also to introduce the client’s proofreading tool, PerfectIt.
“Angela produced a great blog on a challenging subject. I was delighted with the result – she did a really good job with a difficult piece of writing!”
– Daniel Heuman, CEO & Founder – Intelligent Editing Ltd
Copy-editing and proofreading
Whether it’s a full rewrite, an onscreen copy-edit, or a quick proofread, we begin by asking the client for their house style rules.
Where these don’t exist, we can build and agree a style guide to suit, based on spelling and punctuation preferences, header styles and layout. Alterations can be displayed using tracked changes if desired, tags can be added for design, and a report containing any queries or suggestions is supplied on completion.
Client: Macmillan Education Publishing
We have copy-edited and proofread a number of Macmillan Education science and chemistry student text and workbooks for primary and secondary schools in Ghana, the Caribbean and Ethiopia. This includes artwork briefing, cross-checking content against curricular guidance, and liaison with authors where necessary.
“Angela is a very sharp editor, and a pleasure to work with. She has a keen eye for detail, is collaborative and gave insightful advice to help improve not only the project she was working on, but the series as whole. She repeatedly went the extra mile while working to very tight deadlines to make sure that the book was finished on time and looked great. An absolute star.”
– Holly Edgar, Managing Editor – Caribbean, Macmillan Education
Client: Sunrise Setting Ltd
We have copy-edited Taylor & Francis scientific journals for Sunrise Setting, including Liquid Crystals and Remote Sensing. This includes checking for sense, consistency and style. Angela recently copy-edited the Routledge academic books Strategic Leadership in the Public Sector by Paul Joyce and Philosophy of Media by Robert Hassan and Thomas Sutherland.
“Working with Angela has been great. As a copy-editor, she strikes a good balance between the needs of authors and the need to get the book produced. Her suggestions and advice – and her copy-editing – are thoughtful and designed to help the author and the publisher realise the book they wanted.”
– Professor Paul Joyce, Leeds Beckett University, August 2016
Client: Heedi Graphic Design
We have proofread reports by Heedi’s clients, ensuring accuracy and clarity before the copy goes to final layout and design.
“We are delighted to be working with AJ Enterprises, we always receive prompt attention and they offer a truly thorough proofreading service with accuracy, speed and of course, meticulous attention to detail. And to top it all off, Angela is a real pleasure to deal with.”
