Informed Scotland April 2023 – Running to catch up with AI
The debate about the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on learning & skills ramped up across the landscape in April. There was a palpable sense of being swept along – or aside – by the speed of change. Organisations and individuals are in a hurry to learn more about systems such as ChatGPT and Bard, how to use, teach, benefit from and guard against them. And while many are running to catch up, experts and early adopters are keen to share their knowledge and skills, to calm the nerves while warning of the dangers. Look out for:
- the House of Commons Library’s briefing paper on The potential impact of AI on the labour market
- case studies from the National Centre for Universities & Business showcasing partnerships that ‘address human challenges’ via AI
- an SQA statement on the current position regarding AI in education and assessment
- Unesco’s Quick start guide on ChatGPT and AI in higher education
- a new Turing University Network to support connections across data science/AI
- and an Education Scotland online session for teachers on AI – Exploring opportunities for Scottish educators on 18 May.
Equality, diversity & inclusion was another focus of attention in all sectors. Items included:
- Skills Development Scotland’s Equality Evidence Review of the labour market
- Scottish Government’s annual Diversity in the Teaching Profession Scotland report
- and three frameworks: Scottish Council of Deans of Education’s National Anti-Racism Framework for Initial Teacher Education, an Inclusive Higher Education Framework published by QAA and Education Scotland’s Improving Gender Balance Self-evaluation Framework for CLD providers.
